Washington, D.C.
May 2012

About Children’s National Medical Center

Children’s National Medical Center, located in our nation’s capital, is one of the country’s leading clinical and research institutions dedicated solely to the care of children, as evidenced by its consistent inclusion among the top pediatric hospitals in America by US News & World Report and the Leapfrog Group. An internationally recognized team of more than 5,000 pediatric health care professionals serves more than 360,000 patients each year regionally, nationally, and internationally. Children’s is the only exclusive provider of pediatric care in the Washington metropolitan area and the only freestanding children’s hospital between Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Norfolk, and Atlanta. Children’s National serves patients from all 50 states and 45 countries. It also has 81 telemedicine sites around the world in 11 countries and on four continents.

Recognized as an international leader in pediatric research, Children’s National receives over $60 million in research funds annually, and ranks as a top 10 recipient of National Institute of Health (NIH) funding. Research is conducted through the Children’s Research Institute (CRI), the academic arm of Children’s National Medical Center. Its work includes all translational, basic, clinical, and community research programs. CRI’s work leads to improved understanding, prevention, and care of childhood diseases.

Known as “the nation’s children’s hospital,” Children’s National was founded in 1870 to meet the needs of children in the District of Columbia who were suffering from sickness and poverty at the close of the Civil War. In the 140 years since its inception, the hospital has grown from a modest 12-bed facility to a sophisticated facility with 303 inpatient beds and cutting-edge equipment and technology. The hospital serves as the regional referral center for pediatric emergency trauma, cancer, cardiac and critical care, as well as neonatology, orthopedic surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, diabetes, and respiratory problems. Children’s Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the nation, with more than 70,000 visits annually. The facility provides premium care and research in a state-of-the-art environment that goes to great lengths to ensure patients and families are comfortable and well cared for.

Children’s National is committed to ensuring their care is available to all children in need, regardless of their family’s location or ability to pay. As the medical safety net for the children of the Washington area, the hospital serves nearby neighborhoods that have some of the worst health indicators in the nation. As a nonprofit hospital, Children’s National relies on philanthropy to provide world-class care to every child in the community who needs it, and provides more than $64 million each year in uncompensated care. Its reach goes well beyond the main hospital, with seven pediatric primary care health centers, three mobile health units that deliver care to underserved families, and seven regional outpatient centers throughout the Washington metropolitan area. The hospital provides the nurses for the District of Columbia’s public schools through its Children’s School Services. In addition, Children’s sponsors the Children’s National Health Network, the region’s largest dedicated pediatrician provider network. The network includes more than 500 community-based pediatricians and specialists at Children’s National and its outpatient centers.

About the Opportunity

Philanthropic support has always been critical to fulfilling the mission of Children’s National. The Children’s Hospital Foundation, located in Silver Spring, Maryland, promotes philanthropic investment for the benefit of Children’s National, raising on average $45 million annually. Led by Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer, Pam King Sams and Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Foundation, Judy Graham, the Foundation recently completed a five-year campaign that raised over $500 million, including a transformational gift of $150 million — exceeding their campaign goal seven months before the campaign end date. Looking to build on their recent success, the Foundation is developing a bold strategic plan to grow the program from $45 million raised annually to $90 million to align with the medical center’s vision for the future of pediatric medicine.

In order to achieve its ambitious plan for growth, the Foundation is energetically pursuing the following objectives — ensuring that all fundraising activities always embody best practices; implementing an integrated, donor-centric organizational structure; building on already strong branding and communications; establishing the strongest possible policies, procedures, and performance standards; refining their infrastructure to enable the best frontline fundraising; providing superior stewardship to donors; and engaging board and volunteer leaders optimally and efficiently. The Foundation, which expects to also nearly double its fundraising staff over the next five years, is committed to recruiting highly talented professionals who thrive in a transforming environment and who are motivated by the Children’s mission.
