Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC)
Senior Associate for Donor Marketing
Cambridge, MA
May 2012
The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) is an independent, non-sectarian organization that advances human rights and social justice in the U.S. and abroad. UUSC envisions a world free from oppression and injustice, where all can realize their full human rights. UUSC receives no financial support from the Unitarian Universalist Association or from federal or state governments.
UUSC seeks a Senior Associate for Donor Marketing to develop new strategies and enhance existing processes for all donor marketing efforts with a focus on online giving, as well as direct mail, telegiving and workplace giving. Reporting to the Director of Institutional Advancement, s/he will create and execute a strategic plan for donor marketing and have primary responsibility for managing vendors, analyzing data, overseeing creative development for campaigns, and achieving assigned revenue goals. S/he will have the opportunity to build upon UUSC’s significant growth in online giving since 2009.
UUSC’s President and CEO, Rev. Dr. William Schulz, the former head of Amnesty International, has identified as a key organizational priority the building of a national media (including Internet) strategy designed to expand outreach to the Unitarian Universalist community and well beyond. UUSC is currently implementing the initial stage of this strategy, and building a more robust online presence is a key part of this national strategy. Donor marketing is also seen as an important component of UUSC’s progam to engage and build communities through social media and emerging technologies. The Senior Associate for Donor Marketing will play an important role in this initiative.
Qualified candidates will have a minimum of five years direct marketing experience, proficiency in donor databases, strong analytical skills, and a demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice.
About UUSC
UUSC partners with local grassroots organizations in the United States and around the world, standing with these communities as they confront unjust power structures and challenge oppressive policies. In each of the four program areas, UUSC focuses especially on issues of race, class, and gender and their roles in perpetuating injustice and human rights abuses. UUSC is currently partnering with more than 50 organizations in the U.S. and in over 20 countries around the world. Through a potent combination of advocacy, education, and partnerships with these organizations, UUSC supports programs and policies that promote:
- Economic Justice: defending the right to work in dignity for a living wage and to organize in defense of that right
- Environmental Justice: promoting the human right to water
- Civil Liberties: addressing the deepening polarization between the Islamic and Western world and working against torture, wherever it is found
- Rights in Humanitarian Crises: supporting marginalized populations in the response to disasters, both natural and those caused by humans
UUSC’s Rights in Humanitarian Crises unit works to defend the rights of marginalized groups to relief assistance, participation in reconstruction, and full recovery. UUSC’s targeted advocacy campaign bolsters the work it does with grassroots organizations by addressing systemic policy issues at the highest level. UUSC mobilizes its membership of more than 40,000 to contact their elected officials on the national, state, and local level to bring about public policy change with local and global reach. UUSC’s campaigns aim to organize people on the ground to create long-term change around targeted issues.
Through its College of Social Justice, UUSC offers educational programs to social justice activists of all ages through trainings and workshops, sector-specific expertise and unique experiential learning and service opportunities. Through JustWorks camps, participants work directly with people in local communities on direct-service projects. JustJourneys entail seven-to-ten-day trips to the field where participants meet UUSC program partners and other human-rights defenders in order to learn about and see human-rights work firsthand.
UUSC’s origins can be traced back to 1933, when Hitler took power in Europe. Both before and for the duration of World War II, both the American Unitarian association and the Universalist Church of America performed rescue and relief operations for endangered individuals. In 1945 they collaborated on post-war relief efforts in Germany, France, Czechoslovakia and elsewhere. Their close cooperation ultimately led to their merger in 1948 and the formation of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.
UUSC is currently led by President and CEO, Rev. Dr. William Schulz, a Unitarian Universalist Minister and the former Executive Director of Amnesty International USA. Dr. Schulz is the former President of the Unitarian Universalist Association and served as Interim CEO of UUSC before taking on the position permanently in March, 2011. He has appeared frequently on radio and television news and analysis shows and is the author or contributing editor of several books. In 2002, The New York Review of Books said, “William Schultz has done more than anyone in the American human rights movement to make human rights issues known in the United States.” Click here to read a recent column by Dr. Schulz published by the Huffington Post. Dr. Schulz is leading UUSC in its ambitious effort to expand its national media relations and public outreach strategy, particularly via a more robust online presence. UUSC is assembling a team of talented professionals in order to achieve new levels of success in constituent engagement, advocacy, media and public relations, and marketing.
UUSC receives $7M in philanthropic support from its more than 40,000 members, as well as other supporters including volunteers, foundations, and corporations. Approximately 90% of its membership base is made up of Unitarian Universalist congregants located across the United States.
