About the Position
The Senior Major Gifts Officer for University Advancement will have the primary responsibility to develop, manage, implement and oversee strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of approximately 200 – 250 prospective major donors, generally, face-to-face solicitations are expected.
The Senior Major Gifts Officer will also:
- create individualized solicitation plans leading to major outright and deferred gifts in excess of $25,000.00, integrating unrestricted and restricted annual fund, endowment and capital gifts in support of University fund raising priorities;
- advance individual relationships that result in philanthropic contributions; gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and life-time giving potential of individual prospects;
- ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate or make solicitations, and ensure effective stewardship;
- gain a comprehensive understanding of the priorities of the University and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific University needs;
- articulate the mission of UMass Boston, its programs and activities in a succinct and compelling manner;
- develop materials used by Deans, Directors, Vice Chancellors, the Provost and the Chancellor for meetings, visits or individual contacts;
- coordinate specialized appeals targeted at constituent groups associated with a particular discipline, program or initiative;
- collaborate with senior administrators, deans, faculty and volunteers to develop ideas that translate the University’s fund-raising priorities into gift proposals and to advance major gift prospects;
- participate in the planning and execution of special events;
- attend advisory board meetings at assigned college;
- work with planned giving to close planned gifts to the University with an understanding of the principals and techniques associated with planned giving and financial and estate planning;
- gather, record and properly store information about prospects and donors utilizing Millennium, the University’s donor and alumni tracking database;
- work with the Associate Vice Chancellor and provide general direction for a capital campaign in support of the College of Management;
- work with the Dean of the College of Management, Directors, faculty and other Major Gifts Officers and staff throughout the university to develop funding opportunities, engage in relationship-building activities of many kinds with faculty, volunteers and prospects;
- and perform other duties as required or assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred, and seven or more years of successful experience in development and fundraising, three-plus years of major gift experience, preferably in higher education, with an understanding of major gift planning and prospect development is required.
- Experience in fundraising at a Business school is highly preferred, but not required. A valid driver’s license is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills are required, both written and oral, as well as a high level of sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings.
- Discretion and an ability to interact with high-level donors and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Highly valued assets include energy, initiative, creativity, a sense of humor, a pro-active work style and the ability to actively listen.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, sound judgment.
- Ability to be an effective advocate for the University.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment.
- Experience in organizing donor events.
- Proven track record of successful solicitation and securing personal major gifts.
