Senior Major Gifts Officer

The Position

Under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor for Development or designee, the Senior Major Gifts Officer will assist with and initiate the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects capable of making leadership gifts to UMass Medical School and/or UMass Memorial Health Care. The Senior Major Gifts Officer will have regular interaction with faculty, staff, board members, and other volunteers. The Senior Major Gifts Officer will be under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor for Development or designee.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a prospect portfolio of 175-200 donor prospects in a defined territory
  • Plan and implement cultivation and stewardship strategies to motivate donors
  • Solicit contributions of $25,000 or more
  • Responsible for identifying potential donors, creating donor strategies and meeting activity goals
  • Work closely with staff and volunteers to develop effective strategies for prospects with the capacity to make a donation
  • Work closely with other members of the development staff, the faculty and senior administration to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward individual prospects
  • Maintain a high level of constituency satisfaction through stewardship of donors
  • Conduct all efforts in a fiscally responsible manner
  • Fulfill campaign responsibilities, as assigned, to raise support for designated priorities
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience
  • 8 years of successful funding experience in development or academic advancement fields
  • 3-5 years experience identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gifts
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of computerized data bases and Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize task and meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to being a member of the development team
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations
  • Ability to occasionally work nights and/or weekends
