About Year Up
Founded in 2000 by Gerald Chertavian, Year Up is a non-profit organization with a mission to close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the skills, experiences and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education. Year Up recognizes that the Opportunity Divide—specifically, historical barriers to education and professional work— is driven by race, ethnicity, national origin and socio-economic status. Year Up seeks to close the divide by setting high expectations and providing high support for our young adults.

Through a one-year intensive training program, Year Up provides urban young adults ages 18-24 with a unique combination of hands-on technical and professional skills, college credit, and corporate internships. Year Up lives by and adheres to a core set of values that reflects an unshakable belief in the talent and full potential of our young adults.
Headquartered in Boston with a $46M operating budget, Year Up has nine sites in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York City, Providence, Seattle/Puget Sound, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. and continues to expand. Now entering its twelfth year of operation, serving more than 1,400 students per year, Year Up is the 8th fastest growing non-profit started in the 21st century.

Over the next five years, Year Up is embarking on a $55M Opportunity Campaign, undertaking a series of initiatives to both bridge and close the Opportunity Divide. The Campaign has three objectives: grow and strengthen the core, develop the Million-Person Model, and create systems change.

With its Manhattan office located across the street from the New York Stock Exchange in the heart of New York City’s financial district, the site serves urban young adults from across all five boroughs. Eighty percent of Year Up New York alumni are currently employed or enrolled in college. Those who are employed are earning an average of $30,000 annually.
