Boston Medical Center (BMC), the academic medical center located in Boston 's historic South End, seeks a Director of Foundation Relations and Government Grants to join the BMC development team. As one of the fastest growing not-for-profit organizations in the Greater Boston area, Boston Medical Center raised $27.5 million in its 2007 fiscal year, and is projecting to exceed $40 million in fiscal year 2008. As part of the senior management team and reporting directly to the Vice President of Development, the new Director will play a critical role in overseeing all fundraising activities related to foundations and the local, state, and federal governments in support of the many Departments and Programs at Boston Medical Center. Fundraising professionals with a minimum of 7-10 years of development experience, including foundation relations, and with a commitment to mentoring and managing staff are encouraged to apply.

In 2006, BMC opened the Moakley Building, a best-in-class centralized cancer and ambulatory care facility located in the heart of the campus. This building has helped streamline access to care and provides patients with the latest technology and treatment.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Vice President of Development and serving as a senior member of the Development Office, the Director of Foundation Relations and Government Grants will oversee all fundraising activities related to government and corporate giving in support of the many Departments and Programs at Boston Medical Center. The Director will meet with senior staff members and provide insight to the group in the areas of foundation and government fundraising. The Director will work closely with the Vice President of Development to set goals for foundation and government fundraising. Foundation and competitive government grants represent a central portion of the overall revenue formula for the Development Office.
The Director will supervise and mentor seven staff members in the Foundations and Government Relations Office, with the potential of expanding the Office.
Responsibilities
- Undertake and oversee outreach efforts to foundation and government leaders to present funding opportunities, develop proposals in conjunction with Senior Management, Board Members and Providers.
- Conceive and draft proposals on Boston Medical Center programs for submittal to local and national foundations and government entities.
- Develop strategic sponsorship opportunities with corporations and develop proposals in collaboration with BMC medical leadership.
- Establish and maintain regular communications with Providers and Program Directors to insure competent knowledge of programs for which funding is being sought.
- Research and collect information needed to write proposals, letters and other collateral materials.
- Responsible for meeting the reporting requirements of foundations and governments by providing information in a timely and accurate manner.
- Responsible for annual program planning, goal setting and assessment.
- Identify and qualify prospective donors in conjunction with the Research Department to continually build donor pool.
- Assist with other critical development initiatives of the department on an as needed basis.
- Supervise administrative staff for the program area.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 7-10 years of development experience.
- Demonstrated fundraising success in foundation grants, experience in healthcare or science preferred but not required.
- Commitment to managing and mentoring staff.
- Excellent writing and interpersonal skills.
- Proven track record in managing complex programs and multiple demands in a sophisticated setting.
- Proven ability to make decisions, work independently and as a team player.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters.
