Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation
National Director of Development

Norwalk, CT
October 2008

The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) seeks an entrepreneurial fundraiser to join its team as National Director of Development (NDOD).

The MMRF aggressively funds cutting-edge research to develop new myeloma treatments, and to ultimately, find a cure for multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. Founded in 1998 by twin sisters Kathy Giusti and Karen Andrews, following Kathy's diagnosis with multiple myeloma, MMRF is the world's number-one multiple myeloma research funder, having raised almost $100 million to fund 70 laboratories worldwide. Ninety-three cents on every dollar of its $28 million budget is directed to research and programming.

MMRF plans for dramatic growth in the next five years, beginning immediately with its $50 million “3-2-1 Cure” Research Campaign. MMRF's growth has made other successes possible, including the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium (MMRC) which brings together leading research institutions and the pharmaceutical industry to speed the discovery and development of better, more effective treatments. Originally comprised of four Member Institutions including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Mayo Clinic, MMRC now counts fifteen centers as Member Institutions.

In partnership with the Board Development Committee, CEO and COO, the NDOD will provide overall fundraising leadership, planning and strategy supporting all aspects of MMRF revenue goals, including its current campaign and the planning for its next campaign. The NDOD will build a comprehensive development department, supervise a seven person staff, and orchestrate and integrate the contributions of marketing, planned giving and events outsource partners. The NDOD will work closely with the Chief Medical Officer and Director of Research on funding requests and will be involved in the allocation process of distributing acquired funds to research initiatives.

Driven by a strategic Scientific Agenda, a determined CEO, a solid business plan and an actively engaged Board of Directors, MMRF has made significant accomplishments that are nationally recognized, applauded in charity rankings and showcased in various publications. It received exceptional accreditations from leading charity evaluators including a Four-Star rating by Charity Navigator, an A+ rating by the American Institute of Philanthropy, and approval from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for its research grants program. The MMRF has been featured in the Economist, CNNMoney.com, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Wall Street Journal.

Qualified candidates will have 10+ years relevant experience, including proven success raising significant major gifts; an entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to lead and motivate others; and strong interpersonal, communications, and organizational skills. Salary is comparable to an Associate Vice President at college or University. National travel is expected.

About Multiple Myeloma

Multiple myeloma is an incurable cancer of the plasma cell. The five-year relative survival rate for multiple myeloma is approximately 33%, one of the lowest of all cancers. In 2007, an estimated 19,900 adults (10,960 men and 8,940 women) in the United States were diagnosed with multiple myeloma and an estimated 10,790 people died from the disease.

About the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation

The mission of the MMRF is to urgently and aggressively fund research that will lead to the development of new treatments for multiple myeloma. As the world's number-one funder of multiple myeloma research, the MMRF has raised nearly $100 million since its inception to fund 70 laboratories worldwide. The payback on its investment has been significant, including the approval of four new treatments in four years alone. Today, the MMRF is supporting 30 new compounds and approaches now in clinical trials and pre-clinical studies and has facilitated 10 clinical trials through its sister organization, the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium (MMRC).

While keeping a singular focus on multiple myeloma, MMRF research has magnifying power, as several promising treatments have shown success in treating other cancers. H aving set the benchmark for drug development standards, other disease research organizations are emulating the foundation's business model including the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Deafness Research Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, and Foundation for Fighting Blindness.

About the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium

The MMRC was founded in 2004 by Kathy Giusti and with the help of the scientific community. The MMRC is a sister organization to the MMRF. The MMRC is widely recognized as an optimal research model to rapidly address critical challenges in drug development and to explore opportunities in today's most promising research areas–genomics, compound validation, and clinical trials. The MMRC is the only consortium to join academic institutions through membership agreements, customized IT systems, and an integrated tissue bank.

Originally comprised of four Member Institutions (the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center; the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, in Tampa; and the Princess Margaret Hospital, in Toronto), MMRC now counts fifteen outstanding centers as Member Institutions.

In 2006, MMRF and MMRC launched the MMRC Multiple Myeloma Genomics Initiative, a cutting edge genome mapping program.
