Development Writer

Overview

Purpose: To ensure that HSL is equipped with the best, most appropriate information and resources to inspire donors and funders to give to HSL, including:

  • Partnering with the Director, Institutional Giving to develop compelling proposals and reports for foundation and other institutional funders.
  • Partnering with the major gifts team, Chief Development Officer and Vice President, Board Relations, and Director of Development to develop compelling proposals and reports for major gift donors.
  • Identifying existing resources to meet major gift, stewardship, and annual fund needs, and writing new resources when needed.
  • Creating additional written fundraising materials as needed.

Responsibilities

Core Competencies:

  •  Ability to translate the HSL mission and priorities (including complex clinical science programming through our Harvard-affiliated Marcus Institute for Aging Research and Wolk Center for Memory Health) into clear, compelling, and persuasive written materials.
  • Ability to manage a project from start to finish, including research, writing, editing, and gathering and incorporating feedback.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work on deadline. Comfortable managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.

Position Responsibilities:

Donor communications

  • Create high-quality, compelling content to advance HSL’s fundraising initiatives, including:
  • Foundation and major gift proposals and reports
  • Program summaries
  • Custom letters and correspondence
  • High-level appeal letters
  • Fundraising and stewardship mailings and reports (including Annual Fund and other mass mailings, personalized reports, and annual reports on endowed, special purpose, and scholarship funds)
  • Interviews and articles for HSL’s quarterly newsletter, Inspire, and the annual Report to the Community.
  • Organize and maintain online resource library for Development staff and distribute updates as needed.
  • Work with Director, Institutional Giving on proposal and prospect tracking (leveraging Raiser’s Edge database)

Project management

  • Coordinate brainstorming, timeline, and resource-gathering for written projects
  • Coordinate team in developing the most compelling messaging and requests
  • Drive timeline and approval process for resource-development projects
  • Maximize use of Raiser’s Edge as a tool for stewardship efforts

Required Qualifications

  • Sound judgment, thoughtfulness, attention to detail, the ability to think strategically, and a strong work ethic
  • Fluency in using the English language in oral and written communications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Four to six years of experience in proposal development, development communications, and/or fundraising, preferably in a health care setting
  • Experience in the non-profit sector
  • Superior writing and editing skills. Writing samples will be requested and a writing test may be administered to final candidates.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts, including clinical research and health care business strategies, into clear, approachable, donor-friendly language
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines, recognize potential issues and obstacles, and identify solutions to successfully accomplish agreed-upon goals
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently within a team structure
  • Tact and sensitivity in dealing with confidential donor information
  • Commitment to demonstrating HSL’s Cultural Beliefs
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Some local travel among HSL sites
  • Occasional evening events
  • Sitting for long periods of time, 4-8 hours
  • Typing, up to 8 hours a day
